The biblical account
Prepared narrative summary · not a Scripture quotation
Genesis opens this movement with a world disfigured by human wrongdoing. Its difficult opening verses speak of the sons of God, human daughters, and ancient mighty figures without explaining every detail. The narrative then turns toward a clearer judgment: human evil has become pervasive, and God is grieved. Against that dark background, Noah finds favor. He is described as righteous in his generation and as walking with God. The contrast is not between an attractive landscape and an unattractive one, but between ways of living within creation. Before rain or rescue, the story asks readers to face violence honestly. Noah's introduction offers a thread of hope without making the surrounding suffering disappear.
Historical context
Genesis 6 belongs to the Bible's primeval narrative, not a securely dated biography. Interpretations of its opening figures differ. No archaeological location can be assigned to Noah's introduction. Artwork notice: this is a reused contextual reconstruction of a mountain landscape, NOT event-specific artwork; its figure, camp, and illuminated bush do not depict Noah or this passage.
