The biblical account
Prepared narrative summary · not a Scripture quotation
With Pharaoh’s force behind them and the sea ahead, the people fear they have been led into a trap. Moses urges them not to give in to panic. Exodus describes the waters parting during the night and the Israelites crossing on dry ground; the pursuing force is overwhelmed as the waters return. The account presents deliverance as an act of God and the following chapter remembers it in song. The Hebrew sea name is often translated Sea of Reeds. Its modern location is not established, and proposals include different waterways in the eastern Delta and Sinai region. This dramatic image depicts the biblical account without claiming that a particular shoreline has been proved.
Historical context
Exodus supplies the narrative setting, but no securely established date, named pharaoh or complete archaeological itinerary. Egyptian landscapes and wilderness scenes are artistic reconstructions. The Sea of Reeds and Sinai identifications remain debated.
