The biblical account
Prepared narrative summary · not a Scripture quotation
After the final plague, Pharaoh tells Moses and Aaron to take the Israelites and leave. The people depart in haste with dough that has not risen, moving into an uncertain future. Freedom begins as a break from forced labor, not as immediate arrival at a settled home. Exodus 13 describes guidance by a pillar of cloud and fire and explains that the route was not the direct road through Philistine territory. Exact population figures, dates and itinerary identifications remain debated. We do not draw an invented surveyed escape route. The journey’s emotional center is the transition from waiting for release to taking the risks of a new beginning.
Historical context
Exodus supplies the narrative setting, but no securely established date, named pharaoh or complete archaeological itinerary. Egyptian landscapes and wilderness scenes are artistic reconstructions. The Sea of Reeds and Sinai identifications remain debated.

What would you carry, and what would you leave behind, when beginning again?
