The biblical account

Prepared narrative summary · not a Scripture quotation

Acts begins this part of Saul’s story with Stephen’s death. Saul approves what is happening, while witnesses leave their garments at his feet. Persecution spreads through Jerusalem. Saul enters houses and takes men and women to prison. His conviction is strong, but its direction is deeply harmful. Later, Paul describes his upbringing in Jerusalem and training under Gamaliel. He remembers zeal for God while opposing followers of Jesus. This opening does not excuse his violence or generalize it to Jewish people. It reveals a life needing correction and mercy. Before the Mediterranean journeys show his endurance, the narrative asks readers to confront the damage of certainty without humility.

Historical context

Acts associates Paul’s birth with Tarsus and education with Jerusalem. His letters also acknowledge persecution. The exact early chronology, Stephen’s execution site, and individual houses cannot be securely identified. These scenes are reconstructions, not archaeological proof. Artwork review: Jerusalem panorama; not Tarsus or Stephen’s execution. Markers indicate educational themes anchored to illustrated details, not verified event coordinates.
