The biblical account
Prepared narrative summary · not a Scripture quotation
The narrative pauses Joseph's story to follow Judah's household. Tamar marries Judah's son Er and is widowed. Onan then refuses the obligation to provide offspring for his brother and also dies under divine judgment. Judah sends Tamar back to her father's house but does not fulfill his promise concerning his remaining son. Tamar acts through disguise, and Judah unknowingly sleeps with her, leaving personal items as a pledge. When her pregnancy becomes known, Judah orders punishment until she produces the items and asks him to identify their owner. He acknowledges that she is more righteous than he because he withheld what he had promised. The twins Perez and Zerah are born. Recognition exposes a powerful man's double standard.
Historical context
This episode reflects ancient concerns about widowhood, heirs, and household obligations; it is not a general endorsement of its characters' conduct. Exact locations and chronology are uncertain. Artwork notice: this is a reused contextual reconstruction, NOT event-specific artwork. Its tents and figure do not portray Judah, Tamar, or their encounter.
Pause & Reflect
When confronted with evidence of your own failure, can you acknowledge it without shifting blame onto someone less powerful?
