The biblical account
Prepared narrative summary · not a Scripture quotation
Abram is called to leave his country, kin, and father's household for a land God will show him. The promise reaches beyond his own future: through him, the families of the earth are to receive blessing. He departs with Sarai, Lot, their possessions, and the people belonging to their household. In Canaan, the narrative names Shechem and the great tree of Moreh, then the country between Bethel and Ai. Abram builds altars and continues southward. The journey begins without ownership of the promised land or a visible multitude of descendants. Promise takes the form of movement, worship, and a future not yet possessed.
Historical context
Haran and Shechem belong to identifiable ancient geographical settings, but Abram's personal route and camps cannot be reconstructed securely. The ancestral narrative is not independently verified at each stop. Artwork notice: this is a reused contextual reconstruction associated with Sinai, NOT event-specific Abraham artwork. Its figure, bush, and camp do not portray Abram or a location in Genesis 12.
