The biblical account

Prepared narrative summary · not a Scripture quotation

Sarah dies, and Abraham mourns her before negotiating the purchase of the field and cave of Machpelah. The promise of land is set beside the modest, costly possession of a burial place. Abraham then sends his servant to seek a wife for Isaac among his relatives. Rebekah's hospitality at the well becomes central to the servant's discernment, and her willingness to go is explicitly sought before departure. She meets Isaac, and the narrative describes comfort after Sarah's death. Genesis also names Abraham's other descendants and his provision for them before recording his death. Isaac and Ishmael bury him together. The story closes one life while making room for futures that extend beyond him.

Historical context

The traditional Machpelah sanctuary at Hebron is a longstanding burial-site identification, not independent proof of the individuals buried there. The servant's route and Rebekah's well are uncertain. Artwork notice: this is a reused contextual reconstruction, NOT event-specific artwork. Its camp is not Isaac's, and it shows neither Machpelah nor Rebekah's well.
